The Six Million Dollar Man

I came across a rather hilarious joke today:

'How many different online applications do you need to fill in order to apply to a Spanish university?'
'... I dunno..?'

So, in other words: I'm screwed. By the way, I also found out that I won't be able to study Spanish here at Aalto during the summer. Just great, I'm telling you. Umm... Does anyone know of any extra-cheap and half-decent Spanish teachers in Espoo or Helsinki?

Great. I got a letter, whoopee! I'm telling you, someone ought to give the administrative personnel  here at Aalto a slap in the face to wake them up...

The studies pursued abroad will be counted towards the student's degree at Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering.

Bollocks! Those idiots had my name all wrong! C'mon, how hard could it be to write a student's second name right? Although... I guess I don't hate the name... Kalevi. Yeah.

A cleanroom is an environment, typically used in manufacturing or scientific research, that has a low level of environmental pollutants such as dust, airborne microbes, aerosol particles and chemical vapors.

This morning I woke up as a simple mortal human being. Now, on the other hand, I'm a Has-Visited-a-Cleanroom type of guy!

Even though I don't consider myself as one of the most religious whackos on Earth (at least, not anymore) I have to thank God for this Friday and for my summer job at Micronova. How cool is it to visit a facility full of very costly scifi-kind of equipment in a suit that makes one look like a Moomin character? I tell you, it's beyond words! And, to make it even better, I found out that I could maybe work there all by myself after some basic lab training. Well, unfortunately there's a downside to everything...
I love spending time in toilets. Really. I know, it's stupid. I know they say that you can get hemorroids if you spend too much time sitting in a toilet. But, anyway. I like toilets. If I could, I'd spend most of my free time sitting on a toilet seat. And so, in a way it was terrifying to visit the cleanroom today. I mean, do you guys have any idea how much extra stuff (protective clothing etc.) you have to put on to be able to access a cleanroom? The answer is 'a lot'. Now think about going to the toilet in the middle of a lab test in a cleanroom. Not handy. No, no..! So, that raises a tough question: Where am I going to eat my lunch?

So, I'm in. I'm one of Aalto University's exchange candidates for next year.

I have been SO overwhelmingly agitated for the last ten days or so that it has been nearly impossible for me to concentrate on anything. My deepest apologies to anyone who have had the 'pleasure' of being around this angry bear for the past few weeks, by the way...

I guess now it's time to start living again.

Umm... Does anyone know of any nice and cheap rentable apartments in Madrid, possibly in the Leganés area? Or if you just happen to live in such a place... Need a roomie?

Chlorophyll... I sure hope that stuff proves to be fascinating... 'cause I'm going to spend my whole summer studying it at the Department of Micro- and Nanosciences here at Aalto University! I just signed a working contract for this summer. And on top of that, I agreed to write my Bachelor's Thesis on the subject. Why am I in such a hurry?

Hey, who cares! I can't wait, I'm too excited! Organic chemistry, here I come!

Although, it is slightly frightening that some of the equipment that I'll be using will be as valuable as myself.

This post is just a simple piece of information:

• I'm absolutely delighted and very fortunate to be a student at Aalto University, not at University of Helsinki.

Today was the first day of the application period for the ERASMUS programme for the academic year 2011-2012.

And this was the day that I visited the Student Services at the School of Electrical Engineering to hand out my application forms.

Me, nervous? How come?

At least I haven't screwed up anything, yet.

Here's a copy of an e-mail I sent to a professor here at Aalto University:

Hei,

Olen toisen vuoden opiskelija Aalto- yliopiston uudessa Sähkötekniikan korkeakoulussa ja pääaineekseni olen valinnut bioniikan. Olen pyrkimässä ensi vuodeksi ERASMUS- vaihtoon Espanjaan (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, UC3M: http://www.uc3m.es/portal/page/portal/home) ja ymmärtääkseni tarvitsisin Teidän hyväksyntänne ja allekirjoituksenne suunnitelmiini.

Olen bioniikan opinnoissani vasta alkutaipaleella: Olen suorittanut bioniikan perus- ja jatkomoduuleihin (S111-1/ S111-2) kuuluvista kursseista vain Elektroniikka I:n ja olen tällä hetkellä kurssilla Dynaaminen kenttäteoria. Näiden lisäksi olen osallistunut Johdatus bioniikkaan- kurssille tänä syksynä. Tarkoituksenani olisikin aloittaa pääaineeseeni syventyminen Espanjassa. Uskoakseni siitä tulisi olemaan minulle enemmän hyötyä kuin haittaa; osaan nimittäin englantia (UC3M:n Medical Engineering- koulutusohjelman opetuskieli) mielestäni todella hyvin, ja akateemisissa piireissä sekä monissa yrityksissä työkieli on ymmärtääkseni usein englanti.

Harmi kyllä UC3M:n Medical Engineering- koulutusohjelma on varsin uusi. Tästä syystä heillä ei ole tarjota kuin 1. ja 2. vuoden kursseja. Uskoakseni tämä ei tuottaisi minulle suurempia ongelmia: olenhan itsekin vasta opintojeni alkumetreillä. Olen kaavaillut suorittavani UC3M:n ensi vuoden kurssivalikoimasta seuraavanlaisia kursseja:

Näistä kursseista ei ollut kovinkaan tarkkaa kuvausta UC3M:n Internet-sivuilla eikä niiden kurssikoodeja ollut saatavilla. Monet suunnittelemistani kursseista joudutaan varmasti sijoittamaan vapaasti valittaviin opintoihin sekä kandidaatin että DI-tutkintoihini. Osasta kursseja (merkitty ERIKOISMODUULI- merkillä) olen kuitenkin kaavaillut itselleni 20 opintopisteen erikoismoduulia DI-tutkintooni. Tässä vielä nuo kurssit yhdessä:
